Ar Kamal Alwi

Upon Graduating from IIT School of Architecture in Chicago, Kamal started his career in 1994 at Arkitek MAA in Kuala Lumpur. In the mid 90’s economic boom, he was involved in several landmark projects such as the KL International Airport, The Curve Mutiara Damansara, Tapah Prison Complex and Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
Later in his career, he joined Arkitek MTAriffin, a smaller practice, to gain thorough exposure to the various aspects of the practice prior to his professional qualification. In 2011 he formed AKA, a registered architecture practice, and is a co-founder of Citylab Projects Sdn Bhd, a project management consultancy, with Ridzwa Fathan.
Since then, he was involved in a wide range of projects with unique contexts. Projects such as green building retrofit, patriotic memorial building, military museum, drug rehabilitation centre, places of worship and aviation cargo terminal, had allowed him to explore their specific needs and translate them into Architecture. Beyond form and function, his projects emphasize elements of sustainability as well as the impact to society.
His works have gained several design awards such as the Lenggong Valley Visitor Centre UNESCO World Heritage Site Idea Competition and MGBC-PAM Next Generation Green Building Design Competition.
